WhatsApp follow-up without being pushy
Polite nudges that bring quiet Kenyan buyers back — timing, tone, and when to stop.

You sent a full quote — KES 4,700 with delivery to South C — at 2pm. Buyer read it, opened M-Pesa, got a call, forgot. By 9pm they ordered from another shop that nudged once with "still holding size M if you want it today." Follow-up is where many WhatsApp shops leak revenue — not because buyers said no, but because life interrupted after the quote.
For who deserves a nudge vs archive, see how to spot serious buyers. For handoff before payment see handoff from bot to seller. Pillar: qualify leads on WhatsApp.
When follow-up helps
Nudge when you already did real work:
- Price + delivery total sent — silence 4–12 hours
- They asked for photos then stopped
- Ad lead messaged at night; you replied; morning no response
- Payment link sent but no confirmation
They may still buy. M-Pesa interrupt is normal — not rejection.
When follow-up hurts
Stop — do not nudge:
- They said "not now" or "maybe next month"
- You already nudged twice with no reply
- Active refund or complaint — feels like pressure
- Thread was never qualified — only "hi" with no product named
Move on. Respect beats a third "Hello dear customer!!!"
The 24-hour window rule
WhatsApp allows free-form replies while the buyer messaged within the last 24 hours (customer service window).
- Inside 24h since buyer's last message: Free-form nudge — Timi or you
- Outside 24h: Approved message template required
Plan follow-up before the window closes when possible — same-evening nudge for fashion impulse buys.
Three follow-up scripts that work
1. Stock hold (fashion / low ticket)
"Hi — still holding the size M in black for you. Delivery to South C today is KES 200 if you want to lock it in."
2. Quote reminder (furniture / higher ticket)
"Good morning — your L-shape quote was KES 82,000 with Ruaka delivery. Fabric grey still available this week. Reply if you want to pay deposit today."
3. Food urgency (short window)
"Kitchen slot in 40 min — still want the 2 plates to Westlands? Total KES 1,100, same till as before."
One fact + one easy next step. No guilt, no emoji spam.
Tone that works in Kenya
Works: short, useful, specific numbers, optional time bound
Fails: "Hello dear valued customer we noticed you haven't responded!!!"
Match thread language — Swahili thread gets Swahili nudge if you write it manually; Timi matches on configured nudges.
Timi nudges during business hours
Timi can send polite follow-ups on quiet qualified chats:
- Only in hours you set — see business hours
- Only when a quote or payment step was already sent
- You configure rules; Timi does not spam every "hi"
After 24 hours with no buyer message, switch to approved template — not free-form.
Timing by vertical
- Fashion impulse — Same evening. Drop heat fades overnight
- Food — 30–60 minutes. Hunger window closes
- Furniture — Next morning. Big decision, needs sleep
- Electronics — Same day + next AM. Compare specs overnight
Track what converts — adjust one variable at a time.
Track what converts
Simple weekly note:
- Nudges sent / payments after nudge
- Which script worked
- Threads that ignored twice → archive
Double down on timing that pays; stop scripts that get blocks.
Common mistakes
- Nudging before sending full quote — annoying, not helpful
- Three-plus pings on same silence
- Promotional template blast to cold list — Meta restricts
- Nudging refund threads — escalates anger
- Same timing for food and furniture — wrong urgency
FAQ
Can Timi follow up in Swahili? Yes — matches thread language when configured.
Will buyers block me? Rare if nudges are factual and limited. Aggressive blasts cause blocks.
Follow up on every unread chat? No — prioritize quoted or payment-link threads with high intent.
Buyer said "I'll pay tomorrow"? One morning reminder OK; then stop if silent.
Templates for win-back after 48h? Yes — transactional tone; see message templates guide.
Hand off before nudge on big ticket? Often yes — personal voice on KES 50k+ closes better than auto nudge.
