How Click-to-WhatsApp ad tracking works in Kenya
Run Meta Click-to-WhatsApp ads, connect Timi to your pixel, and see Lead and Purchase events in Ads Manager when buyers pay.

You run Click-to-WhatsApp ads, chats increase, but Ads Manager still cannot tell you which campaigns produced paying customers. This guide explains how Timi tracks WhatsApp ad conversions today — without shop links, spreadsheet uploads, or guesswork.
How Click-to-WhatsApp attribution works
When you create a Click-to-WhatsApp ad in Meta Ads Manager, the ad destination is WhatsApp — not a website URL or Timi chat link. The buyer taps the ad, WhatsApp opens on your business number, and sends a first message.
Meta passes referral data on that first inbound message. Timi reads it and labels the chat as paid traffic in your Feed. That is the attribution layer — no redirect page required.
What Timi sends back to Meta
After you connect Meta Ads in Settings → Ad conversion tracking, Timi sends Conversions API events as leads move through your funnel:
| Milestone | Default Meta event | |-----------|-------------------| | Buyer first messages | Lead | | Payment link sent or handoff | InitiateCheckout | | Paystack paid, M-Pesa confirmed, or mark sold | Purchase |
Meta can optimise for buyers who pay — not just people who clicked.
Click-to-WhatsApp vs plain wa.me
| | Plain wa.me link | Click-to-WhatsApp ad | |--|------------------|----------------------| | Opens WhatsApp | Yes | Yes | | Campaign attribution | No | Yes — Timi reads referral on first message | | Conversion events to Meta | No | Yes — after OAuth connect | | Best for | Organic sharing (bio, poster) | Paid Meta ads |
Do not paste your Timi customer chat link (timi.co.ke/s/your-shop) as an ad destination. That link is for organic sharing — Instagram bio, posters, WhatsApp Status.
Setup checklist
- Connect WhatsApp Business in Timi Settings.
- Open Settings → Ad conversion tracking → Connect Meta Ads.
- Sign in with the Facebook account that manages your ads and select your pixel.
- Turn on Send conversion events to Meta.
- In Ads Manager, create a Click-to-WhatsApp campaign — destination = WhatsApp.
- Use Send test event in Timi to verify events appear in Events Manager.
Timi replies instantly on your number while conversion data flows to Ads Manager.
Common mistakes
- Using a website URL or chat link instead of Click-to-WhatsApp as the ad destination.
- Expecting attribution from a plain wa.me link in an ad.
- Measuring chat volume instead of qualified leads and paid outcomes.
- Forgetting to connect Meta Ads before scaling spend.
